Chris Mast, eyes closed and arms folded, against a pink wall Sshhhh

Good evening. My name is Chris.

I design apps that sit next to connected hardware. Engaging interfaces that users enjoy using… enjoy tapping around in. But, since they found what they needed, they put the phone down and live their life. Or go to bed.

Why I may be right for Hatch. I’m currently the lead designer on a companion app for HVAC equipment; a device in the home, and an app that explains it. I’m also the sole designer for a Technician app, which is a data-nesting and control-heavy interface, similar to the Hatch app.

Three projects, one for fun.

Client work first, then the one I made because I wanted to see it exist.

About

5 years into design, 13 years into executing big ideas, stakeholder management, and delivering to audiences.

I'm currently a product designer at Test Double, where I've worked since December 2023 on connected home products for Trane and American Standard — design systems, and research with dealers and homeowners. I'm the sole designer on three products, two mobile and one web, all serving separate user groups. Before that, Northern Trust at Highland Solutions and loan-processing software at MadeLabs.

From 2008 to 2021 I worked in television and media production as a creative producer and writer, pitching ideas to rooms full of creatives. That experience taught me nobody owes you their attention, the note you don't want to hear is usually the right one, and the fastest way to fix a scene is to cut it. All three transfer.

I live in Evanston, Illinois with my family, a dog, and many Hatch devices.

Happy to chat about design, tennis, comedy, and of course, sleep.
